How to Build Your Own Cornhole Boards
Cornhole enthusiasts, gather around! I've crafted many boards over the years, and now I'm thrilled to guide you through building your own. There's something special about creating your board – it adds a personal touch to the game. Let's get started!
Materials and Tools Needed:
- Two 24" x 48" pieces of 1/2" plywood for the surface
- Four 2" x 4" x 48" pieces for the frame
- Four 2" x 4" x 21" pieces for the frame
- Four 2" x 4" x 11.5" pieces for the legs
- 2.5" wood screws
- Wood glue
- Jigsaw
- Compass or a large can (to draw a 6" diameter circle)
- Drill with a 1/2" bit and a 6" hole saw
- Sandpaper
- Paint or stain of your choice
Step-by-Step Building Guide:
Step 1: Building the Frame
- Lay two 2" x 4" x 48" pieces parallel to each other on a flat surface.
- Place two 2" x 4" x 21" pieces between the longer pieces at each end to create a rectangle.
- Check the corners with a square tool to ensure accuracy.
- Secure each corner joint with wood glue first, then reinforce with two 2.5" wood screws.
Step 2: Attaching the Surface
- Position a 24" x 48" plywood piece onto the completed frame.
- Use wood glue along the top edges of the frame for adherence.
- Secure the plywood onto the frame using 2.5" wood screws, ensuring the screws are flush or slightly below the surface.
Step 3: Cutting and Attaching the Legs
- Cut each 2" x 4" x 11.5" piece at an angle (approximately 15 degrees) so the boards can stand 12" off the ground at the back end.
- Position the legs inside the corners of the frame and secure with screws.
- Ensure the legs fold inwards for easy storage.
Step 4: Cutting the Hole
- Measure and mark the center of the hole – it should be 9" from the top and 12" from each side of each board.
- Use a compass or a large can to draw a 6" diameter circle at the marked center.
- Use a 6" hole saw to cut out the hole.
Step 5: Sanding and Painting
- Use sandpaper to smooth the entire board, especially focusing on the edges of the hole and the surface.
- Once the board is smooth, apply a primer (if you're painting the board) and let it dry.
- Apply your chosen paint or stain. Remember to choose a semi-gloss finish for that perfect bag slide.
And that's it! You now have a custom cornhole board, built with your own hands. The best part of this process is the personal touch you bring to your game. Enjoy the process, and more importantly, enjoy the game!
